Introduction

“The Boy and the Heron”, released in Japan under the title ”How do you live?” is the new theatrical feature animation from Studio Ghibli founder and director Hayao Miyazaki. It spent a long time in conception and production; its release marks 10 years since Miyazaki’s previous work “The Wind Rises.” Miyazaki and Ghibli are synonymous with masterpieces such as “Nausica of the Valley of the Wind”, “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away.”

Takeshi HONDA

Takeshi Honda was born in Ishikawa Prefecture 1968. After making his video debut at Atelier Gega, he joined the original Gainax team as an animation director on the TV series "Nadia : The Secret of Blue Water” (1990). He subsequently worked on "Millennium Actress" (2001) and "Cyber Coil" (2007) at Mad House, and at the studio Production I.G.
He was in charge of color as the lead drawing director of "Evangelion New Movie Version: Q" (2012), and the original draft and character design for the Japanese Anime(tor) exhibition piece “Room Available: 20 minutes on foot from Nishi-Ogikubo Station, 2LDK, 2 Months’ Deposit, No Pets" (2014). At Studio Ghibli he has worked on "Gedo Senki (“Tales from Earthsea) (2006), "Ponyo on the Cliff" (2008), and the Mitaka no Mori Ghibli Museum short animation work “Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess" (2010), as well as the original artwork and production direction for "Boro the Caterpillar" (2018). Continuing his work with Ghibli, he was tasked by Hayao Miyazaki’s with the production of his latest work “The Boy and the Heron” (2023.)
