Introduction

Since its very first edition in 1996, when it screened Otomo’s MEMORIES, Japanese animation has been an essential element of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, the largest and longest-running festival of genre cinema in North America. Rupert Bottenberg, Fantasia’s Director of Animation Programming, speaks about the evolution of anime appreciation in the West, and the festival’s history of showcasing animation from Japan.

Rupert Bottenberg

Rupert Bottenberg is a writer, editor, visual artist, event producer, and cultural curator living in Montreal, Canada. In 2012, Bottenberg assumed the position of Director of Animation Programming at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival. Over the course of a decade, Bottenberg has gradually positioned Fantasia as a leading platform for the introduction of new Asian animation to North America and the world at large.
