Introduction
Most Taiwanese people trace their origins to the southern Fujian (Hokkien) region, one of the two areas in China historically renowned for its rich traditions of ghost and deity worship (the other being Yunnan). Since ancient times, numerous legends and beliefs surrounding spirits and supernatural beings have been deeply rooted in this culture. This program focuses on this theme, curating an exceptional selection of independent animated shorts from Taiwan over the past decade. The collection includes imaginative depictions and critical reflections on traditional temples and deities, rural legends about death and the departed, as well as narrative interpretations of animal spirits and ghostly apparitions. Through these works, we showcase the unique and richly imaginative animated creations nurtured by the cultural soil of Taiwan.

In 2015, the Taichung International Animation Festival (TIAF) was established and has since rooted and flourished in Taichung. Since 2017, the TIAF has been organized by the Taichung Film Development Foundation. The TIAF has been held ten times and is the largest city-scale animation festival in Taiwan.
The Short Film Competition, held annually, provides a platform for Taiwanese animators and their international counterparts to share their experiences. Moreover, cash prizes totaling up to 1.35 million New Taiwan dollars are awarded as encouragement. In the non-competition category, the films are grouped by themes, allowing viewers to experience the diversity of perspectives in animation. In addition, children's art workshops and master classes are held. These events not only help children cultivate an interest in artistic creation but also provide Taiwanese animation professionals with opportunities to expand their knowledge.
