アメリカの鬼才クリス・サリバンが10年近くの期間をかけて準備中の最新長編『The Orbit of Minor Satellites（原題）』。完成後にニューディアーが日本配給予定の本作から、冒頭の一章を短編アニメーションとして特別上映。教育映画を模した構成で、とある女性の深い悲しみと闇の感情、そして彼女の精神科医との関係が、やわらかく、ときにユーモラスに、しかし無慈悲に語られていく。

American genius Chris Sullivan’s latest feature film, “The Orbit of Minor Satellites”, has been in preparation for nearly 10 years. The first chapter of the film, which will be distributed in Japan by New Deer after completion, will be screened as a special short film. Structured to resemble an educational film, the film tells the story of a woman’s deep sadness and dark emotions and her relationship with her psychiatrist in a soft, sometimes humorous, but merciless way.

Anxious Body

何かを感じて不安になり、不安だから何かを感じていたくなる身体。セロテープを指で引っ張って切る。そこから身体は何を感じるだろう。質感、形、伝わる感触、あらゆる連想が境界なく呼び起こされ混ざり合っていく。そしてまた不安になる、繊細で健やかな私たちの身体。十和田市現代美術館からの委託作品でもある。これまで90の映画祭にノミネートされ、17の賞を受賞している。

Your body feels something and becomes anxious, and that anxiety makes the body want to feel something. You pull the Sellotape with your fingers and cut it. What will the body feel from it? Textures, shapes, transmitted sensations, all kinds of associations are evoked and mixed together without boundaries. And our delicate, healthy bodies become uneasy again. This work was commissioned by the Towada Museum of Contemporary Art. The film has been nominated for 90 film festivals and won 17 awards.

ある半島の、ある村で昔から続いている子どもが大人になるための通過儀礼。その儀式本番に向け、少年たちは決められた舞を一生懸命練習している。少年にしか見えない鳥がいる。その少年もいつか鳥が見えなくなる。好意なのか、憧れなのか、嫉妬なのか。本当の気持ちは自分でもわからないけれど、少女はずっと少年のことを追いかける。

In a village on a peninsula, a traditional initiation ceremony for children into adulthood has been held since ancient times. The boys are practising their prescribed dances hard in preparation for the main performance of the ceremony. There is a bird that only the boy can see. One day, the boy will not be able to see the bird either. Is it favour, longing or jealousy? The girl doesn’t know what she really feels, but she keeps chasing after the boy.
