Why Katsuhiro Otomo now?

大友克洋監督の『AKIRA』は70、80年代、世界でほとんど知られなかった日本アニメの状況を一変させました。
数々の衝撃的な表現で、新しい映像が日本にあることを気づかせたのです。
日本アニメは世界中で鑑賞されるようになったいまこそ、その起点となった大友作品を一望にすることで日本アニメを再発見できるはずです。

Now is the time to rediscover Japanese animation by revisiting the Otomo works that started it all. In the 1970s and 1980s, Japanese animation was almost unknown in Japan. It was Otomo Katsuhiro's AKIRA that changed all that. The array of stunning expressions in the film made people realise that new forms of imagery could be found in Japan. Japanese animation is now viewed all over the world.

1954年生まれ、宮城県登米市出身。
1973年に雑誌「漫画アクション」(双葉社)で『銃声』にてデビュー、その後『童夢』、『AKIRA』などの代表作を次々に発表する。類まれな表現で日本のみならず世界にその名を知られる日本を代表する漫画界の巨匠。その活動は漫画にとどまらない。1983年の『幻魔大戦』(監督：りんたろう)でキャラクターデザインを務めたことをきっかけにアニメーションにも携わるようになる。1988年には自作マンガを自ら監督した『AKIRA』が劇場公開、その後もオリジナルアニメーション『スチームボーイ』（2004）などを監督した。実写映画では『ワールド・アパートメント・ホラー』(1991)、『蟲師』（2007、原作：漆原由紀）などで監督を務めた。映画監督・黒澤明を敬愛し、映画・アニメーションにおいても卓越した存在と認められている。
マンガ・映像の表現は、今日まで多くの漫画家、映画監督、アニメーション監督にとジュンルを超えて影響を与え続けている。
2013年には紫綬褒章、2014年にフランス芸術文化勲章オフィシエ、米国のアニー賞ウィンザーマッケイ賞を受賞。2015年にはフランスのアングレーム国際マンガ祭でグランプリを受賞した。2022年からは講談社からその創作とプロデュースの全仕事を収録した「大友克洋全集」の刊行がスタートしている。

Born in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture in 1954, Otomo made his debut in 1973 with the manga 'A Gun Report' in the magazine 'Manga Action' (Futabasha), followed by a succession of major works including 'Dome: A Child Dream' and 'AKIRA'. He is one of Japan's leading manga masters, known not only in Japan but also throughout the world for his incomparable expressions. His activities are not limited to manga, as he became involved in animation when he worked as a character designer for "Harmagedon: Genma Wars" (directed by Rintaro) in 1983, and in 1988 directed his own manga AKIRA, which was released in theatres, followed by the original animated film Steamboy (2004). He has also directed original animated films such as Steamboy (2004). He also directed live-action films such as World Apartment Horror (1991) and Bugmaster: MUSHI-SHI (original story by Yuki Urushibara) (2007). He is a great admirer of film director Akira Kurosawa and is recognised as an outstanding figure in film and animation. His manga and graphic expression continue to influence many manga artists, film directors and animation directors across genres to this day. 2013: Medal with Purple Ribbon; 2014: Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France; US Annie Windsor Mackay Award. 2015: Grand Prix at Angoulême, France. In 2022, Kodansha will begin publishing the Complete Works of Katsuhiro Otomo, which will include all of his creative and production work.
