Animation in the analog era produced a huge volume of intermediate materials made from paper and cells in the production process. In the digital age, cell paintings are no longer created, and while the volume of materials that used to be paper media such as storyboards and original paintings is decreasing, the question remains whether intermediate materials from the analog era are industrial waste or cultural heritage. How should academia, which is not a party to the industry and does not belong to the fan community, approach anime intermediate materials? In discussing how this question has been answered so far, this session asks what would be the desirable policy for studios, creators and the regions to expand the animation industry in regional development.
